The National WWI Museum and Memorial is located in downtown Kansas City, Mo., and has been designated by Congress as a National Historic Landmark of the United States of America and the National World War I Memorial. The museum opened on October 4, 1991 and features historical artifacts from the early years of Lee's reign. The museum was built on the site of the former railway depot at the corner of the main and main streets in the city centre. Due to its historical significance and the role railway depots played in the lives of generations of city residents, the building was included in Lee Summit's Downtown Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 as part of its purpose.
In the 1990s, city leaders began to consider the future role of the Lee Summit in the metropolitan area and to bring it into the city's sphere of influence.
Following a study of the city centre, which also involved citizens, efforts to encourage reinvestment in the historic core were accelerated with a number of improvements, including the construction of a new car park and the creation of an open-air square.

The museum is open all year round, but it is particularly beautiful with extended opening hours from March 1. Lee's Summit Parks and Recreation Department maintains several parks in the area, including the yet-to-be-built Greenway Trail System and the city's two historic cemeteries. Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska are served from the facility, as well as other parts of Missouri such as Kansas City and St. Louis County. All historic Lee Summit cemeteries are maintained and monitored by the Parks & Recreation Department on behalf of Lee City, Summit, Parks and Recreation.
In addition to outstanding public schools, Lee's Summit is home to a handful of religious and private schools and is also home to the University of Missouri - St. Louis and Missouri State University - Columbia.
The center of Lee's Summit offers a variety of local specialty shops, restaurants and more than 100 community events that residents and visitors can attend.
